Laetitia Johnson
Senior Consultant Deutsche Post DHL Inhouse Consulting

-How did I start at Inhouse Consulting-

I started at DPDHL Inhouse Consulting (IC) in September 2009 as Consultant. I was hired by IC while finishing my MBA at McGill (Montreal, Canada). At the time, I had already had experience of consulting as I used to run a small consulting firm together with 5 friends in parallel to my studies. I had also been doing several pro-bono consulting jobs for not-for-profit organizations in the Netherlands and in Canada.

My background however lies in Marketing and in the industry of tourism – I worked for 4 years as Marketing Coordinator for the French Tourist Board in Amsterdam (Netherlands) after graduating from a Bachelor in International Business (Paris, France).

It’s during my time in Canada that I heard for the first time about IC. My consulting firm was invited to pitch for a project for IC and a few months after, they came to McGill for a company presentation.

-What do I do today-

I currently work as Senior Consultant and lead my own teams since October 2011. I was promoted to Senior Consultant 6 months after joining IC, according to a clear career path that is confirmed by your own performance. It’s my performance that will soon again determine my promotion to Project Manager.

In terms of project, I was lucky to work with most of our Business Units and on different kind of projects: sales, strategy, finance, operations. I even got to stay on a project long enough to help its implementation – this is not very common in consulting, but something possible when you work for as “inhouse” consultant.

Lately, I have been working on a growth project. One of our Business Units mandated IC to estimate the size of the growth that DHL can capture in Central Africa. I conducted first and secondary research which led to workshops with the countries in scope in Africa.

-What do I like about my job-

What attracted me most when I first heard about IC was the concept of an “inhouse” consulting team, dedicated to serving an extremely large Group. I felt that it would allow me to work in a relatively entrepreneurial team, while keeping the advantages of working for a known and multinational company. Until today, this proved to hold true:

- IC is a team of ~130 consultants. We are close to each other and are given the room to shape our company

- IC also belongs to the group DPDHL, which accounts for ~500,000 employees spread in almost all countries in the world. Working for such a multinational provides you with global projects (and later career) opportunities

The other thing that I enjoy about my job is that fact that it’s driven by teamwork. I believe that teamwork allows individuals to perform better by building on each other’s strengths and ideas. At IC, I get to work with brilliant and challenging minds – I learn from my team mates and get satisfaction from contributing as well with my knowledge and experience.

Finally, I love the international aspect of my job. How so? My colleagues come from over 30 different countries. English is the working language, but you can hear German, Spanish, French or Russian in corridors. Besides, I have had projects that brought me to France, Sweden, Singapore, Ghana and Kenya.

-A final word-

If you are interested in joining our team, I strongly encourage you to come and meet us. Leverage such recruiting events and others (company presentation in universities, career fairs, etc.) to see who your potential future colleagues may be. Consulting is not the easier job, but I believe it is much fun when you have great colleagues as I have. Good luck and meet you soon I hope!
